Italian Somaliland in the south

So we know that various local Somali rulers signed treaties with Italy to become protectorates but this would change after the rise of the fascist government who took a more aggresive role in colonialism and started a campaign to disarm the sultanates and take control for good by 1927. But to my knowledge this was only happening against the Majeerteen and Hobyo kingdoms in the north so how did Italy controlled the south? According to wikipedia the south became colonized in 1908 when they united it with seemingly with no conflict. Simply I want to know how Geledi and Hiraab ended earlier than the northern sultanates.

Imaam Mohamud III Suldan Binyaamin was the Abgaal imaam of the Yacquub dynasty at the time who signed a protectorate treaty with the Italians along with two other local sultans. The year was 1891.

Strategically calculated if they didn’t sign. It would’ve only been a matter of time before we got the Ethiopian treatment. And we didn’t have weapons we would’ve been ran through .

Thay could've been true. But wasn't the Boqors of Majerteen and Hobyo always on each other's ass. Italians fuelled their attacks on each other

It’s crazy how qabil has been our downfall for literally over 200 years. We saw what the dervish did. Imagine majerten and hobyo were united

Most of them signed agreements with the understanding that their local power structures and religious practices would be preserved. Although these arrangements were far from ideal, they did ensure that Somalis under Italian rule were less marginalized compared to those under other colonial nations control. This allowed for some degree of industrialization and, more importantly, provided education and training that fueled the independence movements. For instance, Somalia had a significant number of Italian university graduates, while at the time of independence, the entire Congo had only two college graduates.

This disparity also explains why, when the north and south of Somalia unified, the south was disproportionately better educated, more industrialized, and economically more prosperous, a small glimmer of positivity in an otherwise dark period.

By 1910 the Italians bought the coast from Warsheikh to Kismayo from the sultan of Zanzibar. They did not respect any of the treaties they had signed with any of the clans of the interior, and created a colony in the area south of what is today Galgaduud.

The sultanates of Hobyo and Majeerteen were already regarded by the Germans and British as constituting native African states who had a claim to sovereignty. Irrigated agriculture was not possible there, so interest was also limited. Once the facists took over, they could not accept the existence of legally independent native African states and destroyed the two sultanates from 1925-1927.

So you’re saying if we never signed a treaty we wouldn’t have been colonised? You think the brits would’ve assisted us against the Italians? Also what about the isaaqs signing a treaty with the British
