Somaliland politicians are so myopic, they don't know how to play chess. Their only chance was the chaotic years between 2001-2012, its way too late now. They are part of the Puntland vision of federalism, a federal state living in exile, nothing more.

Nothing is done yet, the sands are still shifting, Somaliland can take a more meaningful role in Somalia at least until proper elections take place. Somali politics is definitely still insecure and therefore still fluid enough for SL to manipulate if SL was serious, especially with the FGS.
And also Remember the HAGist Agenda isn't against the interests of SL, so a SL-HAGist collaboration in Somalia could spell some interesting things. The only issue would be The UAE/Qatar situation but that's bound to be resolved

The majority of the millions of Somalilanders today were born after the region declared its resumed independence and have never thought of themselves as citizens of unitary Somalia.
This is more than just a divide between Somalis, it is programmed into majority of Somalilanders that we will never reunite.

HAG is pro centralization of all power to Mogadishu since they have full control of that city. Even with Irirism, I seriously doubt that Isaaq would be okay with that since the previous centralization of power to Mogadishu is the reason why they're mad in the first place. Also HAG have a history of sidelining Isaaq as soon as they taste power like when Aideed declared himself president without consulting the SNM.
You may find that Puntland and Somaliland will become unlikely allies in the battle for federalism when the whole secession phase ends.

Fyi, I agree tho, isolationism is never good, it only strengthens your enemies, SL should engage with everyone even if it doesn't look good or the benefit isn't immediately clear. Government policy in every field should be about the long view; 10,20,50,100 years, sadly SL, like a small asian child is far too short-sighted
