Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a painful rash around the ear, on the face, or on the mouth. It occurs when the varicella-zoster virus infects a nerve in the head.
Varicella-zoster is a herpes virus that causes chickenpox, a common childhood illness. It is highly contagious. If an adult develops chickenpox, the illness may be more severe. After a person has had chickenpox, the varicella-zoster virus can remain inactive in the body for many years.
How long does Ramsay Hunt syndrome last?
Outlook (Prognosis) If there is not much damage to the nerve, you should get better completely within a few weeks. If damage is more severe, you may not fully recover, even after several months. Overall, your chances of recovery are better if the treatment is started within 3 days after the symptoms begin.
I woke up one day a couple of years ago with half my face paralyzed too, but from a different condition called "Bell's Palsy", I couldn't close one eye (even when asleep I had to cover it with something) and couldn't close my mouth fully so whenever I would drink something, some of it would spill out. Couldn't speak properly either.
