Russia helped Syria for three reasons

1. To maintain their military base in Tartus(close to the Mediterranean sea, a strategic location). Also to protect Syria's natrual gas pipeline which Russia has a stake in. The USA wants to prevent Russia from dominating in European gas market. To stop their dependence on Russia, they had a plan to make gas pipeline from Qatar to Europe via Saudi, Jordan, Syria & Turkey

2. Russia rolled out its new weaponry in Syria. What better way to showcase your new weapons to potential clients then to test them in battle.

3. Political aspirations-Russia sees itself as an equal to the US. After their incursion into Syria, many countries are tilting towards their sphere of influence(along with China).

Russia doesn't give a shit about Somalia. They've no interest in this region.
