Canada has a banana republic-like economy since it is so dependent on petroleum and other raw materials. Hence, your currency will fluctuate with commodity prices like a banana republic currency.
The economy is not dependent on O&G. This is a myth. It contributes to less than 10% of the country's GDP. But the currency is dependent in the industry.
You got to look at exports rather than the entire GDP. Canadian exports are heavily commodity based compared to other advanced economies (like Japan, Germany, the UK etc.).
True but you have smaller salaries and everything there is way more expensive than over here.
