I thought about that for years lol then I was happy if there is at least development regardless of the peoples background and no better choice than the Turkish people who have a history in the area too going back to the Adal wars.

Because they built their embassy on that spot. They got a piece of history, one of the few remaining sites which could be saved.

The mosque is now almost inside the embassy but it was preserved well so I can't complain.
