Mogadishu's argument against Somaliland's independence appears to hinge on empty promises of future stability and the threat of an insurgency it has long since treated as secondary to political infighting.
In his strained argument against the recognition of Somaliland, the Ambassador dared to stress the FGS's contribution to security and stability when weeks earlier the FGS waged war against its regional member state Jubbaland while extremists took back control of vast swathes of territority across the country. Mogadishu's perennial pretext for any financial and political goal is to leverage the threat an extremist insurgency that Mogadishu itself does not seem to regard as a priority.
After years of visible failure, the FGS cannot be taken seriously as a partner for security or stability. Somaliland on the otherhand has remained an oasis of peace. However, the FGS's continuing territorial claims over Somaliland continue to pose a threat to Somaliland's peace and stability and by extension the wider region.
