As part of Barre's socialist policies, major industries and farms were nationalised, including banks, insurance companies and oil distribution farms.

By the mid-to-late-1970s, public discontent with the Barre regime was increasing, largely due to corruption among government officials as well as poor economic performance. The Ogaden War had also weakened the Somali army substantially and military spending had crippled the economy. Foreign debt increased faster than export earnings, and by the end of the decade, Somalia's debt of 4 billion shillings equaled the earnings from seventy-five years' worth of banana exports.[26]

By 1978, manufactured goods exports were almost non-existent, and with the lost support of the Soviet Union the Barre government signed a structural adjustment agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during the early 1980s. This included the abolishment of some government monopolies and increased public investment. This and a second agreement were both cancelled by the mid-1980s, as the Somali army refused to accept a proposed 60 percent cut in military spending. New agreements were made with the Paris Club, the International Development Association and the IMF during the second half of the 1980s. This ultimately failed to improve the economy which deteriorated rapidly in 1989 and 1990, and resulted in nationwide commodity shortages.

wars indeed.

@Saahid Qamaan Most influential President we ever had. He used to come to the Mogadishu Universities and visit the young students and smile in grace. His leadership was unmatched. Jaalle Siad treated every Somali the same. He used to go to Europe during his regime and pick up Somali kids that were orphans and abandoned. He built the statue of Mohammed Abdullah Hassan siyyad in Mogadishu and Hawo Tako. He cut the ribbon of the opening of Djibouti and gave them recognition to become a country. He was a Italian macho man. I remember his pictures in Xamar, Mogadishu. Jaalle Siad started presidency young and aged perfectly in his regime. 2 decades of greatness. God bless him.

He was man of stature with large frame, how was he supposed to sit in a tiny chair made by a peasant Arab?
He demanded a fucking throne before he got there but unfortunately it wasn’t to his satisfaction, plus he was in a hurry to get the diplomacy shit out of the way before he got back conquering souls.

AUN Doctor. Siad Barre

Exactly my brother with the great height Siad Barre possessed that chair is a stick. Our President our leader our prayer he was all of that. He taught us Somalis af Somali. He kept every Somali person in check. He made many people governors and senators, ministers etc. Siad Barre was the engine that made Somalia go. He made Fidel Castro of Cuba to bow him. And Megistu of Ethiopia as well. He remodeled roads and cities all over Somalia. AUN Siad Barre.
