It links Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, to the Red Sea port of Djibouti - a stretch of more than 750km (466 miles).

Travelling at 120km/h, the new service cuts the journey time down from three days by road to about 12 hours.

The $3.4bn (£2.7bn) project was built with the help of funding from a Chinese bank and will have Chinese staff.

Seems like a good thing but why not hirr local workers? It's a pattern seen all over Africa, hiring locals would surely be cheaper than importing workers from China.

Ethiopian workers will be hired in 5 years when they have been trained. China is the way to go.

An African - Chinese partnership on all aspects

Locals can not repair or drive trains. They can also not operate signal equipment. They can be train conductors check tickets..

Fantastic news for east African and the horn in particular. Congratulations to the Ethiopians and Djiboutian. hope to see rail link between Somaliland and Ethiopia soon

its always so weird to me when the chinese and the turks put their flags up on everything they build. like isn't it odd having a foreign flag flying everywhere from a hospital, to a school, to a railway station?
