New report on Mogadishu by Heritage institute.

Heritage institute are a think tank based in Xamar that regularly publish informative reports. This particular one is an extensive report based on the capital that I found interesting.

Heritage institute is a compromised think tank which forwards secessionist and enemy ideas of Somalia. They’re just like sahanresearch. Take them with a grain of salt

The FGS has had complete control over Mogadishu since October 2011. It has been 13 years. What has the FGS managed to accomplish in those 13 years? very little. Everything good in Mogadishu is a result of private sector activity. If a full accounting was done, the FGS would probably be a net negative. Mogadishu generates more than ~$200 million a year in taxes and floods every year. The FGS does not bother build basic storm drains for the people it taxes.

The federal government has utterly failed. The international community's refusal to allow the capital of a UN member to fall to Al Qaeda is keeping it on life support.

It is estimated that the annual energy consumption of Somalia is 4 million tonnes of locally sourced firewood, which meets up to 90% of energy needs.
the little trees we have are being destroyed. Sad. We need oil and coal,

this report is telling us what we already know, there is no government to speak of its all a show

What do you walal, I am sure there are many that read it. I read it too, I will often just not say anything, as I am not yet that familiar with Somali politics.

I just gave this a read.

Depressing AF. A capital is supposed to be the shining light of a country, but nowadays this place is nothing more than a burden.

All that money from taxes and their solution to literally every single problem is outsourcing

Something in this thread that I’d like to push back on is the idea that Mogadishu is exceptionally bad. The rest of the country is pretty much the same if not worse. Mogadishu has also only had approx. ten years of relative peace to even begin building/rebuilding. Despite the concentration of wealth in the city this is not a lot of time and even in ten years the city has changed massively and improved tenfold. People don’t know how bad it was. Biggest inexcusable thing for me is the lack of adequate drainage. Pretty much all southern coastal cities have ~8 months of rainfall throughout the year so this should be priority number one for the government. They’ve began building it out but for a city as big as Xamar it’ll be a while before there is adequate coverage.

People are harsh because they remember the past. There’s a reason why it was called the pearl of the Indian Ocean. Strong xamar = strong Somalia, inshallah it can be restored to its former glory soon

InshaAllah. I was pretty sad to see how it looked like when I visited this summer but it’s 1000x better than 2013 when Kebab was knocking on our door at night telling us to turn off our street lights or else. Alhamdulilah.

Private sector booming in Xamar. Despite all its problems, no city in Somaliweyne comes close. Hopefully a BRA comes that takes the city to the next level inshallah.

That is the responsibility of the public administration not the private sector. I acknowledged that can be a problem in the last sentence.

The war is more stop/start. Feel like with good planning and the right equipment a government could push AS into small controlled pockets of land.
AS won't be defeated if Corruption, clientelism to international entities and clanism still runs rampant in the goverment.
