Koyama island is part of the bajuni archipelago. The archipelago is just above 62 miles along the coast. Koyama is a Small Island spanning 31 miles with a coastline of 17.1 km, making it the second largest island in the archipelago. There are 2 settlements on the island one called gedeni and the other on a hill a mile or so away called koyamani.

The island is hilly and full of vegetation considering the locals all vowed to not cut down any trees, the population relies on small scale fishing and their goats. The island has incredible coral reefs and marine life, Tuna, lobster, swordfish, shellfish, qubo (commonly eaten because it’s very nutritionally dense. The island hasn’t had any disturbances in decades and there is not a single thing on the island other than mosquitos that can harm you. The island is home to 4 mosques, the island does not have a cell tower despite locals complaints to the gov in-land. The prominent personality of the island are : Nakhoda (captain) Jibril actual elder of the island , Sheikh Hisham , Moallim Abdullahi , Sharif Yusuf (Ex Deputy Minister TNG of Somalia) and Dr. Yusuf Munye. Overall the purpose of these kinds of posts will be to encourage those in the diaspora to take initiative and choose to build a life back home. And I know some will call me delusional but how delusional do you think caadans were when they picked up their bags and moved to the Americas in the millions in search of greener pastures on the other side of the hill. Anyways I hope I inspired some people.

Good thread, What would you say is the rough total population of this island? I could not find this information out there

Is it even common for non Bajuni Somali to settle on these Islands. There has to be 4 generations waiting lists.

Weirdly enough I couldn’t find anything modern. Maybe in one of the Somali YouTubers that go there they mention the population in the video. Look around and tell me if you find it. Regardless there’s only 2 places on the island where fishermen and their families live
