You can see a lot of similarities from the democratic government of 1960-69 to the one now. But the main difference is the government then wanted a strong military and it was the only sector of government free from corruption and nepotism. That’s what allowed siad to take over. Whereas today the military is purposefully kept incompetent to prevent a coup. Politicians learned from 69 and new to never make a competent SNA If they want to prolong their corruption without any accountability. Now we have politicians who use the state as a means of filling their own pockets. Harry Truman once said, “Show me a man who got rich through politics and I’ll show you a crook” We have an entire government full of crooks motivated to become MPS not out of nationalism, not to lift their country out of crippling poverty but to secure their own finances. Our government purposely attracts the worst of our society. If a competent cabinet were to ever come about, it would have a Herculean task due to the decades looting and neglect. Even during the kacaan many of them lived off of looted government money and turned to alcoholism as a result. Case in point, Xoosh Kibray who used to be a cab driver before Afweyne gave him a monopoly on imports in Xamar and he became rich.
Kacaan became terrible post 1977. The authoritarianism and war crimes started after siad fucked the Ogaden war up. It wasn’t all bad and people enjoyed his rule until then.
