If we do adopt democracy, how we going to fit this with Islam and more importantly with our Traditional elders. Right now our respected traditional elders over-see MP nomination and they usually do the selection. It was similar to how we used to be prior to colonialism and it has worked quite well. How do we fit Democracy into this?
Do we still keep the traditional elders in the loop similar to now where the 66 members for parliament are pre-nominated by the elders and after receiving the OK from their elder, they then register for parties and compete in competitive elections? Or are we going to adopt a similar gurti style where the elders have their own chambers and parliament has it's own chamber similar to SL?
The problem with the gurti model is the elders will 'lose' respect and be seen as political which is quite dangerous in an environment like Puntland were civil strife can occurr and we need a respected meditator who isn't comprised due to politics. Right now our model with the elders not participating in politics beyond nominating MP's they are seen as not 'tied' with politics and still respected.
Or do you propose we eliminate the elders altogether? that is what happened in mogadishu and you see the disaster that caused for mogadishu people who now have no elders to return too and noone is respected enough to solve differences for them.
