I don't know how valid those results are. Even the author acknowledged that the study had limitations:

In general, in order for a scientific study to have conclusive results it needs to:

1) Have a large sample size. In this case, the sample size would need to be at least in the thousands and cover women from all regions of Somalia.
2) Be reproducible. There can't just be one study done, there needs to be multiple studies with the same methodology and similar results.
3) Peer reviewed and critiqued. The scientific community needs to review the results and methodology and come to a consensus that they are sound.
There are other criteria also, but these are the most notable.

The study in this case meets none of these criteria (as far as I know), so the results are not really reliable. In fact, a large portion of scientific studies do not meet these criteria, which is why I make it a point to not trust scientific findings reported in popular news articles unless I do some background research into the studies myself and see what the scientific community has to say about them. Especially when it comes to social science and psychology, since these are the fields that are most notorious for having bad studies.

As for the percentage of Somali women who are in polygamous households, I don't really know. I know a couple of my uncles in Somalia who are in polygamous marriages, but most of them are monogamous. The 28% figure may be accurate, but we will never know until conclusive research is done.

I've heard about the half sibling hatred recently. If the father abandons one of his wives most of the time he also abandons his other kids for awhile. They might get jealous of the other family that's receiving a lot more attention than them.

What's the whole point in having children if you aren't willing to become an active father.
