I don't think it's going to end like that; why would Russia allow a rump Ukrainian State to join NATO when this was ostensibly the reason for the invasion?
The best of Ukraine's military is being systematically destroyed in the Donbass and the Southeast, so it makes sense for Russia to move onto the rest of Ukraine after this; Kiev did not fortify the other regions for 8 whole years -- making those areas easier to capture.
The first point is exactly why I said Russia invading Ukraine is stupid.

That assumes that Ukraine will accept the loss of its agricultural lands, industrial heartland and its coastline. All the mineral and hydrocarbon resources are located in the East and Southeast.
The Russians are now demanding that Ukraine accept the loss of Crimea, Donbass, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia; the Russians will eventually move on Odessa and insist that Kiev cede that to them as well.
I suspect that the Kremlin won't even countenance the existence of a rump Ukrainian State in the West; I think this is the end of Ukraine.
I'm certain that once the Russians gain a firm foothold in the Donbas and Southeastern regions, they will continue on to other areas in Ukraine and its major settlements. They are still eyeing Kharkiv and will likely resume operation near there in future.
This is not an indication that the Russian armoury is being destroyed but that the fighting in the Donbas is intensifying. So they are sending more weaponry to continue on the offensive.
Is this war still happening? Has any progress been made since it was last trending like 3 months ago? This was so anticlimactic
