The West don’t care about them in a sense that they could give less of shit if they’re in NATO or not. But they would care if they get colonised.

Even if the US decide it’s not worth it, the UK most likely will. That will mean nukes hitting your city.

the red line is nato. ukraine is not part of nato. nato countries talk about sanctions. meaning russia can invade ukraine laakiin at a price. russia is ready for that price if it prevents being surrounded by nato. this is a red line for russia.

Ukraine was a sovereign state prior to the USSR actually.

Before that, half of Ukraine was part of Austria and even historically (500 years ago), Crimea (home to an indigenous Muslim population) was a Khanate.

The reason Russian is prevalent in Ukraine is due to the dictatorship of the USSR that placed the Russian language first.

Regardless, it’s is very clear throughout history that a Ukrainian identity did exist but repeatedly faced extinction efforts by Russia.

Ukrainian nationalism goes back 300 years. There are poems that refer to Russia as colonialists even back then.

The idea that Ukraine and Russia are brothers but Ukraine has recently spurned them is incorrect. For almost its entire modern history, Ukraine has hated Russia.
