Growing khat in Somalia is just stupid. Just buy it from Ethiopia or Kenya where they aren't as water scarce.

That is why it isn't for international use just local. Khat is grown through rainfed method in
Sanaag (water that otherwise would have gone to waste) so underground water is not being
used anyway.

Interesting. The Galbeed region used to grow a lot of khat domestically in the 70 and early 80s before it was banned by the Kacaan. When Siad Barre came to Gabiley region in the early Kacaan period he apparently was shocked that the locals there had so much kibir from all the money they were making selling khat that they were feeding their animals baaris iyo baasto. Even some of the poor locals got rich very quickly off growing khat.

This lead to him banning it, since he realized these people literally had no use for Government and were not dependent on him. The shit they import from Ethiopia today is spiked and laced with chemicals anyways, it is not safe for use in my opinion.

If Siad barre was smart he would've imposed a high VAT rate on Khat & only allow gov't approved producers to grow & sell the drug and ban imports from ajnabis; tax revenues could've been huge. Unfortunately he was a socialist muppet drinking marxist kool aid bs. However, personally i support a complete ban on the consumption & sale of khat in today's Somalia.

Although I hate khat and the affects it has on the people.
I have been concerned about Ethiopia making $500 millions from taxes annually. Imagine if the Somaliland government had that extra $500 million of taxes?
I also believe this is the best way to stop khat in the long term if the government was to bring in strong regulations. Khat should be strongly regulated by the government and not let some oligarchs get rich.
