Isn't it interesting that societies that promote extreme segregation of the two genders, seem to have a lot of khaniisyo.
They should have acted normal in the first place and allowed women to be part of society instead of locking them up like they are private parts and not human beings. Now it's too late for them and with the advent of LGBT advocacy, it will be even more prevalent and in the open.
It is more complex than that. Societal tolerance towards male homosexuality in these societies predates gender segregation as prescribed by Islam. Arabs, Turks, Persians, Central Asians, South and South-East Asians etc. were historically tolerant towards sodomy. Only those assuming a female role in homosexual encounters are generally considered Khanis in these societies.
There is wisdom in the requirement that the sexes shouldn't mix freely when young and unmarried because it can lead to fitna. In urban settings, STDs and premarital sex leading to pregnancy rocket in underdeveloped countries where there are no restrictions on free mixing between the sexes and a lax attitude towards Zina due to a lack of religious or moral guidance. Somalis were historically not necessarily strictly segregated by gender in the Mii, but the sexes occupied separate spaces as dictated by their roles in society hence there was not much contact between unrelated individuals apart from ceremonies etc. We also lived in extended family social units. Moreover, FGM was an obstacle to casual sex encounters in the Mii due to the difficulty associated with deflowering a virgin girl.
Fast forward to the present where Somalis have become more urbanised and the sexes more freely in schools, public spaces etc., and it can be observed that our moral standards have dropped in regard to Zina with more teen pregnancies outside marriage etc., young girls/women being taken advantage of or 'prostituting' themselves to older men because of an addiction or for material or financial gain etc. Wouldn't be surprised if STDs become widespread too as it is being 'imported' from neighbouring countries. The social media promotion of degeneracy does not help either.
