Self-determination and independence within reach, says ONLF Spokesperson

Minneapolis (HOL) — The Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) believes that self-determination and independence for the Somali region are within reach, according to its spokesperson, Addani Hirmooge. In a recent interview with Somali TV of Minnesota, Hirmooge discussed the organization's journey, current status, and other issues.

The ONLF, formed in 1984, has been fighting for the rights of the Somali people in the Ethiopian region of Ogaden. Historically, the group has engaged in armed conflict, but in recent years, it has shifted its focus towards a more diplomatic and political approach.

Hirmooge reiterated that the ONLF's initial objective—to support the Somali people—remains steadfast despite the group's change in tactics. The organization now uses diplomacy and political advocacy to fight for the rights of the Somali people and to struggle for peace in the region.

"We have been fighting for our people to decide their own destiny and be consulted on whether to join Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya or to stand alone," Hirmooge said. "We are on the path to self-determination. There is little time left for self-governance and independence. If we don't raise the flag now, we will lose everything that the flag stands for."

Hirmooge also emphasized that the ONLF is always prepared to advocate for peace and the rights of those who are deprived of it. "We are ready for peace," Hirmooge stated.

The spokesperson concluded the interview by urging the people of the Somali region to support the ONLF. He emphasized that the organization stands for the rights of the Somali people that are neglected by the Ethiopian government and that the people will ultimately determine their own fate.

The Somali region, also known as Ogaden, has a predominantly Somali population and has been a contentious area between Ethiopia and Somalia for decades. The ONLF has been a critical player in the struggle for self-determination in the region. Despite a peace agreement signed with the Ethiopian government in 2010, the situation remains complex, with ongoing disputes over territory and resources.

I salute ONLF for their bravery, but since the leadership off DDSI changed alot of the Rer isaaq & Makaahiil became horgal for Cagjar. It’s quite a toothless group right now and i fully understand that they might not want to jeopardize the well deserved peace & stability they got rn. Ethiopia will sooner or later destabilize and when it does let’s hope a real gov is found in Somalia to assist our people.

Should ONLF rebrand itself? would it have any effect?

Doesn't change anything. Politics in Africa comes from the barrel of a gun. Ifa slim chance the ONLF gets a referendum going it will be tampered with by Addis 100%
The only way is to fight the central government and that's only possible by getting a unified Somali front and external powers backing it with arms. Before somalia used to supply the ONLF with weapons but it collapsed so it can't anymore.

And IOG ain't got the balls to send trains full of guns into Galbeed.

Our leaders are cucks wlhi.

ONLF is still a Qabil movement that doesn't represent the Somalis in K5 so I still see nothing changing from the current situation in Ethiopia.

ONLF cut it ties or at least distanced itself from Afweyne internal conflicts when the former WSLF og branch was used by the regime as a loyal paramilitary force ordered to crush rebels and dissidents which led to their downfall further more K5 is the only "autonomous" kilil that doesn't have a well organized elite or ruling group where its leaders since 1998 was selected from Addis Ababa making it to be treated as a colonial region not that different during Haile Selassie times cuz of the stupid tribal divisions that exists there.

Right now, they've allied themselves with the main opposition parties of DDS under an umbrella group with a collective objective to the current political system of DDS. I do believe that they will compete the next election against PP more or less together, but we'll see if the end up participating elections considering how they oftentimes are marred with voting irregularities, which was very blatant last time.

For what reason, Inclusivity? When Cabdi ileys own sub sub sub clan was fighting him for xoornimo and an independent galbeed most of the non OG was supporting Liyuu not ONLF. Today they are the same people wanting to disband Liyuu. It wont make a difference the ones ready to the die for that land will no matter the name and the rest will just join Oromo out of OG cuqdad their issue however.
