Tribalism is of course an impediment to progress, but tribal asabiyah can also be a basis for cooperation leading to progress. The reason why tribal identity has survived this long is that it does have benefits.

The question should be how do we reduce the negative polarization caused by tribe, while keeping the benefits. I don’t see Somalis abandoning tribe wholesale, so we can at least reduce the harm from it.
