Gaalkacyo

Gaal = Pagan (Oromos) Kaac= Leave. Where the pagans were banished (?)

That is all I know directly.

Mogadishu doesn’t mean seat of the shah @convincation. Mogadishu derived from a morphology of the Somali words "Muuq" and "Disho" which literally means "Sight Killer" or "Blinder" basically referring to the city's blinding beauty. The Persian etymology theory has been debunked because it's not called Maqad Shah.

I’ve heard about people saying hargeisa meant little harar but I’m not too sure about that one. :tacky:

From the top of my head
Mogadishu-seat of the shah
Hargeisa-where animal skin is sold
Galkacyo-where the infidel was banished from
Kismayo-chisumu which means something in bajuni
Dir dhabe- where dir struck his sword

"The name Kismayu(u) is of Bajuni origin. It is formed from Kisima yuu, ‘northern/upper well’, and can be pronounced as Kismayúu or Kismáyu. Kismayo and Kismaayo are alien versions."

Kismayo was the Bajuni settlement furthest north. The village was on the small island where the port is now.

There never were large Oromo populations in Gaalkacyo. It referred either to native Somali pagans or it could be an ornamental name not based on history.

I'm not too sure wlh, as I'm not from there, but I did hear that it had a large slave market, where Gallas (Oromos) were the main source of profit (ie. Slaves). Once the natives felt that their population was too large, they extradited immediately. Hence, it was given the name "Gaalkacyo" (where the pagans were banished).

I'm not too knowledgeable on this topic, as I'm not from there, but this what I was told. Maybe you should ask natives who were born & raised there.

We would find significant Oromo admixture in locals from around Gaalkacyo today if Oromos lived there in the past, but we don't. That area has one of the highest percentage of Somali on 23andMe and generally in other tests as well. You can differentiate Oromos and Somalis on genetic tests easily.

I really see no evidence that Oromos ever lived there. It either referred to ethnic Somali pagans or it is a mythical name.

The town used to be called Rocca Littorio by the Italians, it could be that the Gaals leaving in this case are the Italians.
