Arabs started to settle in somalia in the early middle ages, Mogadishu had sizeable arab presence. By 12-13th century Mogadishu developed a mixed arab-somali culture, the turning point though was in the 17th century when Hawiye tribes defeated the ajuraan-arab alliance and conquered Mogadishu. From that moment arab tribes in Mogadishu changed their names to somali names and adopted somali language and culture. Nowadays benadiris are a mixture of somali, arabs, bantus and pakistanis but they are completely somalized. Non Arab minorities in subsaharan africa rarely assimilate, on the contrary they arabize africans. The opposite happened in Somalia. Even recent arab migrants from yemen who came in the 20th century quickly adopted somali as their first language. Today no benadiris speak arabic as a native toungue which shows how strong somali culture really is. Benadiris are also very wadani, they were represented in the somali youth League independence movement and they are strong supporters of our country.
