I was watching this podcast called rocking your priors which talkes a lot about social science and the diffrence cultural and economic factors of how countries or societies differ. One intresting thing she talked about with the academics she interviewd is the importantce of female labor participation and how in the muslim world it's incredible low and she talks about this ties into other stuff like cousin marriage. And a culture of female seclusion and clannish patriarchal societies. I looked at somalia's female labor participation rate it's like 19% while not high either it's like 1or 2% lower than the most liberal arab countries and Muslim South Asia which are stable countries and way more developed. Its also way higher than places like yemen or Afghanistan. The main thing apparently behind these countries is that they share a culutral package of islam and patriarchal clan based societies. I'm wondering why somalia which is alo a clan based patriarchal society. Never developed this culture of female seclusion or cousin marriage considering how similar are social structure is to the arab world and muslim south Asia.
