Somali Footballing Legend 'Cantar Jeenyo' Passes Away

Mogadishu (HOL) — A former Somali national team and LLPP Jeenyo player, Ahmed Abdikarim Walaayo, known as Cantar Jeenyo, passed away at Medina Hospital in Mogadishu on Sunday night after suffering a heart attack.

Somalia’s Football Federation President, Ali Abdi Mohamed Shiino, extended his condolences to Cantar Jeenyo’s family, relatives, and the Somali sports community, calling his passing a tragic loss for the nation.


Cantar Jeenyo began his illustrious career in Somali football in 1969 with the Bankigiyada Club. Over the years, he played for prominent teams, including the Fiyat Club and LLPP Jeenyo, later joining Gadiidka Club before returning to LLPP Jeenyo. He concluded his professional career with Al-Ittihad Club in Qatar, where he played for a decade.

After retiring, Cantar Jeenyo moved to Canada, where he actively contributed to Somali sports as a member of the organizing and technical committees for the Somali diaspora community for over 30 years.

Tributes poured in from Somalia’s Ambassador to Turkey, Fathudin Ali Ospite, as well as politicians, former and current sports legends, and players who remembered Cantar Jeenyo’s remarkable legacy and his enduring support for young talents in Somali football.
