Dhofar only became apart of the Omani empire in the late 1800s. Culturally and historically it was a part of Hadhramaut Yemen. During the 1960s under the reign of Qaboos' father, Said, Dhofar was an impoverished and neglected region of Oman. Which led to an armed rebellion by commie guerilla separatist movement (backed by South Yemen). One of the leaders of the Dhofar Liberation Front was an Arabized Somali. The war came to end when Qaboos usurped his father. Under Qaboos' rule many rebel leaders were given high positions.
