A woman who bought a London council flat for £78,000 has been left devastated after being told, just weeks later, that the entire block is up for demolition.

Jamila Farah, 51, who lives with her 24-year-old son Galid, bought her two-bedroom home in Edmonton, north London on May 14, after living there for 20 years.
Enfield Council will now has to pay her £230,000, after councillors agreed on a 'timely buy-back' of properties owned by leaseholders based off market value, plus an extra 10 per cent in home loss compensation.

£150k + profit within months doing nothing lol Somalis should take advantage of the right to buy scheme councils do. I have some relatives who own their council house and even those who don't own their flat or house get compensated nicely and rehoused in the same borough. 78k was a bargain tho good on her.

That’s what a lot of Somali parents been doing the past five years, some are waiting until their kids are grown, waiting for their big discounts to buy their houses, lol I was groaned at for pointing that most Somalis in London live in council houses which they are able to buy it for a discount and they deffo can with their 8 kids in full time work, in the next 30 years Somalis are going to be middle class

This is a big win for her, now she can buy a house in a good area, and a more accommodating one
It’s not a win. The house is worth much more than what they offered her. She won’t be able to buy another house in London with that amount.

Saving up money for years to stay in the hood instead of leaving the hood :mjlol:
These so-called “hoods” are now up-and-coming areas. Contrary to popular internet beliefs, many people desire to live in London, there is more demand than there is supply for rental places, and gentrification is starting to creep in. These areas are much more desirable compared to what they were 20 years ago.

My mom really admires how Pakistani families are able to buy not 1 but 2 or 3 houses. She was telling me that's how they move up classes and she's absolutely right. Home ownership is the foundation to establishing wealth, having a base can mean the difference between your child struggling or them succeeding. Even if it's in the hood, it doesn't matter considering how quick hoods are gentrified nowadays.

10k from each child and they can buy the property, then sell it once the prices increase.

She has a 24 year old son get out a deposit down and get halal mortgage and make him pay for the monthly bills
