Went to ‘my community’s’ Somalia day celebration for the first time in a long time and I recognized at most 4 families from my childhood among the swarms of people!
What once was a little barbecue where each family needed to bring a thing or two, morphed into people setting up shop to sell sambuus/ burgers…like a fair (it reminded me of a fair, if anything) Loved seeing all the people enjoying themselves but it was still a bit jarring
I remember the first time we got a bouncy slide for Somalia day and 8 yr old me thought we were officially in the big leagues.
So yes, I feel a bit like a founding father, a sort of pioneer of my local Somali community.
