Somalia grants fishing rights to China

Is this deal good or bad? Giving 31 fishing license to China out of all countries, Chinese vessels are know to do illegal fishing with or without jurisdiction.

Indonesia is having major issues with China for years of illegal fishing on it's waters with military support, xoog.




Even other Africans are pissed off that Somalia give rights to China which will give them a reason to snoop around other waters nearby such as Kenya,Tanzania etc.

While Beijing denies any wrongdoing, its fishing boats, supported by coastguard and navy vessels, have also been seen as testing its territorial claims in the South China Sea. In 2016, an Indonesian patrol boat seized a 300-tonne Chinese fishing boat, Kway Fey 10078, for fishing near the Natuna Islands, where China’s infamous “nine-dash line” marking its South China Sea claims overlaps Indonesian waters.

Pudjiastuti says the poachers are now switching tactics, to operate from the high seas, beyond national jurisdictions: “With modern technology, and the size of equipment, with 150km long lines, with 100km of nets, they can drop the nets in the high seas and pull [the catch] from within the exclusive economic zones of everybody.”

Without more international commitments to tackle the issue, she adds, migrating fish which range across the seas such as yellowfin tuna and cod, will suffer.

I understand we don't have the funds for a proper coastal guard, but if Farmajo actually gave a shit he'd give an exclusive contract to Norway or another Scandinavian country. In exchange for letting us keep half their catch and blocking any other foreigners from fishing in our seas. This would last 5 years, until we make enough to fund a coastal guard of our own. Cadaans invented "sustainability", they can be trusted with this.

We're in this mess because we allow taxi drivers to be presidents.

PL and SL have coast guards who patrol for illegal fishing. It's common for Yemeni fishers to get arrested by them.

Since SL government is opposed to that deal I suppose they will just arrest and deport the Chinese fishers and seize their boats lol.

PL will do whatever they want, I don't know their stance on the deal but they do have the power to stop unwanted fishing.

Countries like Norway and Finland has many years centuries on expertees on fishing vessels and are such trustworthy, but China with all their illegal activities on our coast is no brainer the latter is very bad choice.

But current administration is too lazy to google their current illegal fishing in Somalia using Thailand and Taiwanese flags, the info is out there but they choose to ignore them and sign up the Eco freindly China.

At-least West-African countries have an excuse, they were the first ones to get ripped off so they had no-one to compare their situations to. Farmajo could have got all his info on Google, like you said.

China pretty much owns all of Africa, every African leader went to China last year to sign up to the belt and road. China is powerful in Africa, the Europeans are no match for them.
