In a try to undermine Djibouti, Somaliland has outdone themselves by offering Ethiopia a pipeline from the gas and oil reserves in the Ogaden region to Berbera instead of Djibouti. Somaliland Minister of Energy and Minerals Jama Mohamoud Igel arguing it would be more cost-effective.

“Why not send natural gas and crude oil from the Ogaden basin to Somaliland’s coast at Berbera?” Somaliland Minister of Energy and Minerals Jama Mohamoud Igel said in an interview, referring to the region’s main port. Such a pipeline would be more “cost-effective” at only 400 kilometers (249 miles), rather than the 700 kilometers to Djibouti, he said.

Unfortunately for Somaliland the deal with Djibouti has been signed already. Unless they do a two-way pipeline which is not completely unheard of it looks like Djibouti will have this one. It was indeed a good try from Somaliland though with better timing they could've pulled it off and for all we know it might still happen.

The chairman of Djibouti’s ports authority, Aboubaker Omar Hadi, said he wasn’t aware of the offer, but GCL-Poly and his government had already signed the contract for a pipeline. “Business is about competition,” he said by email.

This is the doing of the disgruntled goat fuckers in Dubai. If somaliland was serious about this, they'd have made this request 2 years ago where they would've had a good shot at it. Not only has the deal been signed but the $3b liquification plant is under construction.

Its all about politics, cost effectiveness doesn't matter much since we saw ethiopia/UAE opt to build a pipeline from Assab to Addis instead of the more cost effective djibouti.

Hope guelleh finally gets the message and cuts all ties with sland and closes down their embassy

I honestly think building a pipeline from Ogaden to Berbera was already on the table but was most likely denied because Djibouti is the safer option with the only negative being that it's more expensive because of the distance.

You are right about this because Somaliland does not have strong lobbying powers(lets be honest) and are probably getting help from UAE.

Huge concern with a pipeline to Somaliland is security but this can be eliminated by the fact that the military base in Berbera is in place.(No idea if it's fully operational yet) it was reported to be done by June or July this year.

Also since DP World is owned by UAE if the single pipeline goes to Berbera or even a two-way pipeline they benefit from it greatly.

There are oil basins all over ethiopia so this is the first battle of many. Djibouti uses ONLF/ fellow clansmen in ethiopia to lobby on it's behalf.

China, who probably have final say on the matter, will be extracting the oil from ogaden and will most likely choose djib

The fact that sland is even putting it's name out there as an alternative is big for them tho

Obviously Djibouti doesn't like this because it interferes with their interests but the Chairman of the Port seemed to take it lightly and not to serious.. Do you think the Djibouti government will respond harshly?

I personally hope they do because sland now serves as an agent of dubai/dp world. Why would bixi do this knowing there was little chance of it actually becoming reality? Miscalculation on his part

walaaltinimo between the people but not the respective governments

I personally believe SL has a very high chance of getting it .

It makes economic sense .
Business is all about competition as DJB minister said .

Probably your right, it's that beef with dubai and djibouti kicking them out which is the only reason berbera is on the table now. But it's hard to overlook djibouti for somaliland even with the beef with dubai for ethiopia trade. Somaliland is a political mess, anything it signs will be challenged or denied from mogadishu, it's not politically stable.

I agree with you signing a deal with Somaliland is difficult because Somalia will cry about sovereignty and it will reach UN, EU and Arab League like last time. Somalia already did this once and failed miserably so it kind of discredits Somalia a little.

With UAE lobbying like this for Somaliland out of spite for Djibouti it's kind of hard for the government of Somalia to stop SL atm.

Nonetheless it would stir up controversy and Ethiopia might not want that currently.

Do you think Somaliland themselves came up with this idea, they have trouble making roads in the capital lol. It's just luck that UAE wants to undermine Djibouti by rerouting the pipeline to Berbera and coincidentally Berbera is a big part of Somaliland economy. I highly doubt they are helping just to help, they have their own interests.
