The unemployment rate among youth in SL is 75%. It's ridiculously high. The gov claim they are doing 'all that they can' and have given the example that they have increased the number of civil servants from 9000 to 16000 in 6 years, as evidence- But quite apart from this indicating their hard work in the area, I think this is more indicative of why the problem is so bad in the first place. Getting more youth into work by just employing them in gov work positions in a few thousand posts ove several years will put only a small dent in the numbers.
I noticed though, that Somalis seem to have an issue with employment the world over. Look at the diaspora somalis and their unemployment rates in comparison to other diaspora communities. In the UK, apparently, only one in ten Somalis are in full time work. In Finland the Somali unemployment rate is apparently 69,8 %. In Minneapolis USA, Somalis' unemployment is at 21 percent, but that's still three times the rate for the general population during the same period of time. The same issue in Canada. These are things you can't blame on Ethiopia and Kenya, or Arab Booty Shakers. These are two very different situations, obviously, but I think it is worth considering that perhaps Somalis, for whatever reason, do not take advantage of opportunities, do not work hard and not creative. All of those tahriibers would likely end up as a percentage of the unemployed somalis in Europe. I think the evidence from around the world suggest we need to reassess how we think about work culturally. I am not even sure what I'm trying to get at here tbh, because I'm not sure what that would entail. Am I just being too harsh? Or misunderstanding things?
