Somalis in Turkey: A quick breakdown

I’ve been here for a while now and asked Somalis living there as well as Turks about the situation, realising this.

1. The stories regarding Somalis and Turks is largely political. Somalia is largely regarded as Erdogan’s pet project in Turkey and his opponents see Somalis as a symbol of Erdogan’s preoccupation with foreign affairs.

2. There are a lot of Somalis there. Like a lot. Tourist areas, shopping malls and generally upscale areas have a lot of Somalis. In Izmir, I saw three Somali ladies in baati and a puffer jacket running in the city centre.

3. Somalis in Istanbul live in two areas: Aksaray, which is not too far from the Blue Mosque/Hagia Sofia and in New Istanbul, which is where the housing developments and mall of Istanbul is located.

Fob Somalis live in Aksaray and Diaspora Somalis live in New Istanbul but it’s not uncommon to see fobs in new Istanbul and diaspora walking around Aksaray.

Also the rumours that Somalis are publicly drunk in Turkey etc. is bullshit.

There are a lot of Somali students in Turkey that come from a variety of qabiils which dispel the “one qabiil” assertion placed on Somali students abroad.

How would you say the Somalis act there in comparison to other countries?

In a nutshell, their behaviour as a community is neutral. Any degeneracy is canceled out by the amount of diaspora Somalis that regularly come with foreign currency.

I would say Somalis in Turkey as a whole aren’t much different than Kenya or UAE or Malaysia.

Turks don’t like them do they?

Honestly, most don’t hate Somalis as a group.

You don’t see Somalis begging in Turkey or scamming tourists like other ajnabis in Turkey.

Half the Somalis in Turkey already have Western passports and come either as tourists or live there while the husband sends his salary over.

I asked Somali fobs in Turkey about the Turks and they said they don’t mind Somalis particularly.

Istanbul is full of ajnabis. A lot of central asians live there as well as Arabs and Africans. These people generally make up the dodgy stall owners, beggars or street sellers. Fob Somalis in comparison work in Somali-owned businesses or study, they’re not really involved in anything bad in Turkey.

What the fobs did tell me was that in tuulos, the reception may be different. Especially ones that are anti-Erdogan.

Beenta jooji you blackie

Probably not Syrian but I’m not surprised if they thought he was Arab. I got asked if I was Saudi at the Blue Mosque but tbh, in Turkey a lot of people could tell I was Somali.

When I was in Istanbul, I was also asked if I was Arab but maybe it's because I'm Reer Xamar. I mean Syrian Arabs don't look too different from Turks, so I was like wth.
