xalimos in the comments saying we were slaves to romans

Fun fact some don't know but Cushites used to raid ships crossing their waters and even took some of the folks as slaves. We have accounts from the Greeks and Romans describing this or at least the Romans from what I remember. In the case of the Eritrean and Jabuuti coasts where the Aksumites ruled for a time we have accounts that whenever relations were poor between Rome and Aksum the Aksumite King would give the local "Berbers" leave to raid Roman and Roman associated ships at their leisure.

In one instance they raided a ship carrying a man named Frumentius, his brother and father and if memory serves me right they slaughtered the other people on the ship including his father and took him and his brother slaves where they were eventually brought to the Aksumite King's court where Frumentius in particular introduced the King to Christian Orthodoxy and that, niggas, is how Christianity came to the Horn of Africa nearly 1700 years ago.

So if they never raided the ship all of the Horn of Africa would be Muslim or kafir

All of this is true sxb. Here is one youtuber who sums up how somalis made xabashi become christians.

These dumb xalimos don’t realise that ancient history is about who has the most convincing rumour, most of it cannot be verified without doubt.

This ninja's video isn't very accurate, though. We know, for example, that even by the 1st century AD when the Periplus was written that there was a ruler over the Eritrean coast (probably a predecessor to the Bahr Negash or an Aksumite King) who was noted to be well-versed in Greek and Greek philosophy and this was like two centuries before Frumentius was born so this idea that Frumentius showed up and just suddenly taught the Aksumites about Greek and outside culture is a joke.

And lol at how he mentions "Europe" being ahead. Nigga please. Greece and Italy back then were barely "Europe" and more in line civilizationally with Anatolia (where many Greeks lived), Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Trancausus and Iran whereas the rest of Europe like the lands of Celts and Germanics was nothing on the world stage and seen as "barbaric" by the mediterranean peoples.

Did Somalis even call themselves somali back then

Who knows. Our language would have been pretty different back then. All of the dialects spoken by the four main clans of Dir, Darood, Hawiye and Isaaq would have been one back then and so would Af-Maxaa and Af-Maay but one way or another the people who lived there were definitely coastal, pastoral nomadic Cushitic people and our predecessors/ancestors.

nope as their identity lied with whatever sultanate that one lived in and also what qabil one was apart of.

He's talking about around 2,000 years ago, abowe. Sultanates? And Somalis weren't retarded. They were aware of their relation toward each other even in the age of the sultanates when the word "Somali" began being used. Why the hell do niggas think the Sayyid was able to recruit people from so many different clans and was travelling all over Somal territories to recruit niggas? You really think our ancestors had no sense that they were more related to each other than to Xabashis, Carabs and Turks?

But yeah, sure... There was no real sense of "nationalism" before the modern era and most people were loyal to their qabil or under the hegemony of a local Sultanate that was usually centered on some settlement. The notion of the "Nation state" in the Horn of Africa is mostly a foreign one that was brought to the region due to the presence and influence of Europeans. This period is also when, lo and behold, you suddenly start seeing a drive for Horn Africans to write their native languages down in standard scripts when before that the Christians mainly used Ge'ez and the Muslims mainly used Arabic which served just fine for their non-nationalistic elites who ruled based more on things like birthright, religion and so forth.
