When someone converts to Islam, their past beliefs and actions are considered mute and the slate is wiped clean. They are then welcomed as believers. It’s quite simple.

The Andrew Tate conversion was a unique case within itself. I don’t know this young fella but i think he’s genuine.

It does not matter how people come to Islam or the Truth, it just matters that they arrive.

In Islam people whose heart lean towards Islam can even be given Zakat to bring them into Islam.

When a place is conquered people are given the choice of converting, leaving, or paying jizya. We can not open people hearts to see who is sincere, but it is Allah SWT who guides and changes hearts. Their descendants all become Muslim.

But I can understand why that irks kuffar who hate Islam, so they come up with excuses calling it a grift and what not.

It is not us Muslims business to look into peoples hearts but to spread the message and once someone declares they are Muslim they are unless they commit a nullifier.

Usamah bin Zaid (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:
Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent us to Huraqat, a tribe of Juhainah. We attacked that tribe early in the morning and defeated them, (then) a man from the Ansar and I caught hold of a man (of the defeated tribe). When we overcame him, he said: 'La ilaha illallah (There is no true god except Allah).' At that moment, the Ansari spared him, but I attacked him with my spear and killed him. By the time we went back to Al-Madinah, news had already reached Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He said to me, "O Usamah, did you kill him after he professed La ilaha illallah (There is no true god except Allah)?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah! He professed it only to save his life." Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) repeated, "Did you kill him after he had professed La ilaha illallah?" He went on repeating this to me until I wished I had not embraced Islam before that day (so that I would have not committed this sin).

Another narration is: Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Did you kill him in spite of his professing La ilaha illallah?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah! He said out of fear of our arms." He (ﷺ) said, "Why did you not cut his heart open to find out whether he had done so sincerely or not?" He continued repeating it until I wished that I had embraced Islam only that day.

They want to extinguish the light of Allāh with their mouths, but Allāh will perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it.

It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although those who associate others with Allāh dislike it. 61:8-9
