This is madness; this is getting out of hand -- and what's worse is that she got married off to some old man

each cow costs around 2k dollars. 2000 x 252 = 504,000 dollars. Each sheep costs around 700 dollars. 700 x 50 = 35,000.

35,000 + 504,000 = 539,000 dollars

If she sells them all quick cash

Edit: Sells them before her parents and brothers take it all**** :mjlaugh:

The average valuation of a cow in the USA is between $2,000 and $4,000 according to Google. The average valuation of a sheep in the USA is $100 to $150 according to Google. These prices can vary from country to country, breed to breed, market to market and how well you negotiate and raise your livestock. One could easily negotiate far more per head.

However, let us be conservative and let us go with the lowest valuations per head then do some simple arithmetic:

2,000 * 252 = $504,000
50 * 100 = $5,000

Bisinka, South Sudanese reer tuulo sitting on some decent assets. Time to invade...

The strange thing about this is that we don't use cows for meat -- unless it's a special occasion

We essentially use cows as currency; and as sources for milk and other dairy derivatives. People raid for them; die for them; give them names; and ones with certain colour variations are used to formalise forgiveness and peace between communities. Our world revolves around cattle.

After they migrated out of the homeland, the Maasai-Samburo were apparently so offended that other groups would dare claim the right to rear cattle when they came across them in Kenya-Tanzania.

That definitely sounds like us

Proper NS/AA NE African cattle pastoralism culture. Mashallah. Rest assured that I intend to do deep-dives into NS peoples in time on AM. Genomic analyses, literature reviews, long write-ups, historical reconstruction. I got love for our other half, walaalkay.

What’s the dowry situation like in South Sudan ?

Incredibly high for those that have some cattle wealth left; most people can't afford to fork over 50-100 cows, but it was around that figure prior to the Second Sudanese civil war in the 80s.

Even in the West, we spend a fortune to get married; my half sister (same father) got married to my mum's cousin for around 83k; and my distant relative got married for 80k a couple of years ago

Damn, I have a question a bit off topic before dinkas and other nilotes converted to christianity what was the previous faith of the dinka people? I'm curious

Our religion was already somewhat similar to Christianity before we converted to Christianity en mass in the 80s; God (Nhialic) was the creator of the heavens and earth and his son (Deng) was our intermediary between us and the holy father.

Oh a bit similar to somalis, the reason why somalis converted so easily to islam and quickly compared to other regions was because somalis believed in a monothestic God already

Was it her choice? I really despise dowry systems. What does that say about you that you can put a numerical value on a woman?

Most of the women (even in the West) see it as normal, admirable or re-affirmations of their worth; and the taller, prettier the girl... the higher the dowry

I've broached the idea (to women) that we should do away with the whole bloody thing, only to be met by protestations about not wanting leave for another family for free

It will only disappear once we develop and modernise
