The way I understand it - and I might be wrong - but maheer does serve a purpose it prevents a divorce on flimsy grounds or at least should.

If the man divorces or mistreats his wife and she asks for a divorce, my understanding is that she gets to keep the mahr.

On the other hand if she divorces him for no reason or if she cheats on him and he divorces, then she has to give it back

Thats how I understand it to be.

She gets to keep the meher regardless of abuse or not in the even of divorce. The only time he keeps the meher is if they are married but never consummate the marriage..he gets to keep part or all of the meher money/possessions. If you sleep with your wife the meher payment agreed on is her's even if she cheats or asks for divorce. But if a woman wants a divorce she probably doesn't care for meher money I think because if he doesn't have the payment ready she'd need to stay in the marriage. Most women who ask for divorce forgo parts of the meher and sometimes all of the meher just to get out of the marriage.

I was present at this wedding and this farax was negotiatin in front of everyone. The brides father requested 7k, the groom said i cant afford more than 3k.
