Africa is not ready for democracy.
If you ask the average Farah on the street what is democracy?
99% of them wouldn't be able to answer that.

Neither was Denmark when it gained a constitutional monarchy and rule of the people in 1849. You have to start from somewhere and improve from there, and in the meantime you create precedences and tradition that enforces democracy.

At least Denmark was civilised.
Our people are the least civilised people on the planet. They're not ready for democracy. Look at Somaliland who had democracy for 26, has their economy improved, healthcare, education?

Democracy is worthless if the people are starving. It doesn't guarantee economic progress, in fact, it hinders it. People should choose competent leaders, but instead they vote for their kinsman. Somalia's problems aren't democracy, but tribal politics and severe incompetence and corruption.

Somaliland has not had "democracy for 26 years, it's first official vote was 2003. Furthermore it takes more time than for democracy to settle. It is a continous struggle.

We need a frame-work to work from. One party state led to civil war and clan-based society has led to untold horrors and is half the reason must of us is in the West.

Democracy gains a legitimacy that no other system can afford. Somali do not want to be rule but be rulers themselves and a democracy affords them that.

Democracy is only suited to high income countries with a huge educated middleclass population. It doesn't suit tribalistic poverty-stricken desert Bedouins. Just look at the economic development of every nation in history, it starts out as undemocratic with a large uneducated underclass. Then they gradually achieve prosperity and economic affluence. Then the growing middle-class demand greater rights, more political plurality and liberty. It's the same from Britain to South Korea. But if you force it, it never works.

Somaliland should invest in sewage infrastructure, and shut down all wells within city limits. This was bound to happen. You cannot have a modern city of 400k without sewage services, burying waste will only buy you so much time before it starts to contaminate the entire city's water supply.

As for democracy, if people don't even have the opportunity to choose what they are going to eat for the day, or wear tomorrow, or whether to study or go start working, then focussing on choosing between Party A and Party B is futile. Those people don't have a choice at the most personal level. Give them the freedom to make those choices, and there is a big difference between freedom and democracy.
