Sultanate of Mogadishu, a major power in the medieval Horn of Africa and a merchant trading state. The earliest known coins currentldate back to the 13th century and continued into the 17th century.

Mogadishu coins that have currently been found have the names of around 21 Sultans, and have been found in different parts of Somalia, the Horn, the Gulf, Turkey, and Iraq.

It seems that Mogadishu currency had great influence and had traveled down the trade routes in the Horn all the way over to Ankober, a town in the Ethiopian Highlands. So Somalis and other Horners weren’t ignorant of the uses of currency as it was a fundamental part of the internal trade of the region
