I know some of yall folks are still single but for the folks who were born/grew up outside of somalia how do you plan on teaching your kids somali?

My wife isnt somali and I speak broken somali. I don't plan on going to somalia most likey for the next 10+ years due to instability. What are my options? I think it's important for my son to speak multiple languages (English, Spanish, Somali).

Looks like you need to speak more Somali around others if you think about it how often do you speak Somali? that could answer your question

But really though just talk A LOT of af somali with family watch somali news and somali dubbed films

Maybe go back to Somalia hargeisa is pretty safe

or you could marry a Somali chick and make sure to speak somali in the house as a rule

There are many young Somalis who were raised in the West by Somali parents from Somalia and their Somali language skills still turned out shit (see @AbdiJohnson) because those kids barely use the language outside the house. Now if these people start teaching watered-down Somali to the next generation it will be a total mess.

This is why diaspora communities tend to lose their mother tongue by the 3rd generation (lots of examples of this in the US and Australia).

That's one thing I don't understand I mean If you live in a English speaking country how can your somali turn out soo bad?

I'm from Sweden and here you have to learn English and Swedish than its understandable if your Somali is lacking but most ppl i know speak it fine and got no problems with it

make sure your kid is exposed to someone who can speak somali daily e.g somali ayeyo or awowe

Unfortunately I don't live near my family so don't have any way to expose him to it. Are there books or online material that I can use to improve my Somali and pass on to him?

I was thinking more along the lines of a language book like Rosetta stones. Unfortunately I'm not at the level of being able to read Somali. Thank you for the links though. Those books will become useful in the future once I get the vocabulary and grammar down.
