25 years in the West and all that money sent to unemployed khat addicted relatives wasted.

What the Palestinians used their Diaspora money on

Building a brand new city for and by Palestinians, called Rawabi

What Somalis use their diaspora money on

And the Palestinian Diaspora have also funded many schools and community services in their old neigbourhoods.

  • Around 4.2 million – or 41 per cent – of the Somali population rely on remittances from abroad as their primary source of income. 26 per cent of those who receive remittances from abroad do so from friends and family in the UK. That’s about 1.1 million people receiving money from the UK alone. Remittances are estimated to account for 50% of Somalia’s gross national income and some 80 per cent of all new business ventures in Somalia are funded by remittances
:snoop: We send over $1.5 Billion home every year, and it barely keeping people alive. Atleast businesses are opening but what does that matter when they hire foreigners instead of Somalis

If I was the Somalia Govt I'd just scoop up some oil, use it to pay soldiers a liveable wage, see everybody flock to the army cuz most young men are unemployed, scoop up some more oil and use it to bankroll new sectors and when the Army is done :gunsmiley::gunsmiley::gunsmiley:alkebab you'll have strong minded people with jobs to give.

Every single Muslim country sends money to Palestine since Palestine is the pretty white girl of the Muslim world. Even somali and other Muslim people who never even gave a f*ck about their poor relatives back home in their famine stricken countries sends money to Palestine everytime Israel bombs them

That new city Rawabi costs as much as Dahabishill sends yearly.

All I ever hear is uae or turkey or Kuwait financing something in Somalia.

What @Khathead said is true

But there is an flaw in our system. If there were jobs the remittance could be used on new schools, community services etc. Having to survive of a relative in the diaspora isn't the optimal choice for either party. Except for the elderly who deserve whatever they need

Construction and infrastructure are among the things Somalia is somewhat lacking, and both employ tens of thousands of people. If remittance was pooled into building projects and road construction it would smack 2 birds in one stone

They only built shit in the capital which alshabaab then blows up and then they have to start from scratch again

What are you talking about? Schools are being built everywhere.

Remittances are there to help family members not build infrastructure. There is no other steady income for most Somalis to survive on, there are not many stable jobs available.

All Somalia really needs to do right now is to create security and get rid of corruption. The economy will then take care of itself.

There can never be enough schools in Somalia :manny:

Push money into construction, shipping and oil sectors and low level corruption will dissolve as there is no need for it. Additionally pay a good wage in the military and you'll have plenty of forces to be trained by Turks and others. And hopefully the people that come out have a good work ethic that Somalis can at times lack

The remittance system currently is no different from receiving welfare.

Remittance money won't pay for all of that. Foreign investment and aid is the better solution.

@Discontinous is right, we need a way to pool these remittances together, create new industries rather than just keeping people going check by check. Aid is always stolen in Somalia, also it's never worth the value the donors claim it. Foreign investment needs regulation and taxation otherwise we'll get ripped off as much as they can get away with. This is Africa where the deal is 90% to investors and 10% to the country and of course the government take that 10%. If we got deals like the Gulf countries it would be a good idea.
