The importance of "dressing your age"

When is the cut-off age for wearing designer t-shirts, jeans, puffer jackets or 'athletic' or branded/gaudy trainers? I have acquiantaces (some of whom are Somali) approaching 30 still dressing like teenagers. It's embarrassing wallahi. Espesically at networking events or seminars. It's either wagie office attire or North Face jackets and jeans with these lads.

Granted it's their choice & some of these guys are brilliant & insightful nonetheless, but you can see certain (important) people at these events visibly recoil. The UK's still very much classist and your outward appearance/personal conduct carries alot of weight. This isn't Silicon Valley waryadahey, you can't get away with looking sloopy.

For those of you who give a shit and are in the mid 25s approaching the jeans and Tees "cut-off", here's my advice:

  • Try wearing Pleated trousers or a pair of Chinos. If you must, a pair of plain black jeans.

Screenshot 2024-02-18 at 12.54.45.png

  • Try a reverse collar polo, zip polo, an oxford shirt or a plan white t-shirt (if you're wearing slightly more 'smart-ish' trousers). Something more toned down in colour/pattern.

  • Footwear wise, AVOID anything overtly branded or gaudy like your life depends on it. Stick to sneakers with one colour, I'd recommend white, grey or black. You wanted to be remembered for your talking points and how well you've sold yourseld/your ideas, not for wearing Neon coloured Jordans. These people aren't trashy council estate girls you're trying to get head off of. And don't be a dickhead who does the whole "no/insible" socks shit either. You're not some South Korean K-Pop twink.

  • For jackets, this will vary on the weather, but if the events outdoors you want to avoid puffers jackets & the like sxb. You're not climbing up Mount Everest stick with a basic Harrington jacket, or a more toned down bomber jacet. But i'd personally recommend simple Suede jacket.

Agree with your post.

Men in their 30’s wearing t-shirts and brand clothes is the epitome of cringe.

Maybe because most guys can’t afford suits, so they buy local clothes that’s worth below £25.00.

Or most men in their late 20’s and 30’s thinks is the way to represent modernism; and it’s cool and attractive. .

You can see in this pick which looks more professional and attractive and which looks less professional and less attractive.

Im taking notes, I will be closer to 30 then 25 this year. I have been dreading this moment for some time. It will be hard to say goodbye to my Northface puffer jacket and my Nike Airforce 1s. These soldiers have served me well. Atleast hooyo will be happy I look classy in my trenchcoat and boots but at what cost?

It's embassring wallahi, espescially as young work professional. You want to be taken seriously.
You can get away with cheaper suits, you don't have to break your bank account. But I can't stress having a relible tailor enough wallahi. You need to find one and foster a good relationship, they'll have good idea of your body-structure and how to alter your clothes really quickly.

Even witht he simply white tee you post, you can dress it up a little with some trousers and smart casual sneakers etc. The best advice I can give though, would be hit the gym, because you'll look amazing even in a a £20 Polo.

Dressing more your age doesn't have to be this daunting task wallahi, but it's important you get a handle on it now. Make slight adjustments over time sxb, you don't have to change it all up all at one.

Forgot to mention this in the original post, but you can find really good pieces from Reiss, ARNE, Uniqlo, Axel Arigato (footwear) etc. Just look around to find what beat matches your build/frame.

Also, GET YOUR MEASUREMENTS, I can't stress that enough. Most of the clothes you buy off the rack probably wouldn't fit your frame.

I'm in my early 20s and I have realised that I need to switch up my dress sense. I completely agree with this post.

I think if you are 21+ it's pretty embarassing to be dressing like 15,16,17 year olds. Nike tech tracksuits etc.. I've reached that age I need to switch it up to smart casual.

Can you post a few smart casual examples, for colder environments like the UK. Would be much appreciated.

Adult men dressed like this makes me think they have a criminal record, unless they are on a sport field in cold weather.

This is only acceptable between ages 15-20. It is very comfortable clothing so I understand why they wear it.

But 21+, it looks childish. Imagine walking down the street and 15 year olds and a 24 year old are dressed exactly the same. Its not a good look.

So, Nak is trying to promote that soft life to the matching tracksuit lads.

That shit's cringe if you're over the age of 25, delayed adolescence 101.
Imagine trying to get people clearing £300k a year to take you seriously if you look like you're there to fucking rob the event:heh:

I'm not sure if you're the UK, but the roadman is basically the Chav 2.0 :susp:
Wallahi that just screams "low socio economic background/bad with money" and reeks of overcompensation.

That shit might give the the local council estate mullato girls from broken homes the fanny flutters, but any respectable and worthwhile woman would laugh you out of the fucking building.

I look at those outfits and in my head flashes a montage of long, dirty fingernails, dirty kastuumo, dirty houses, stained pillow-case, air mattress, crack-den, running trains on women, the stench of weed/cigarettes, crying hooyos, credit card fraud.

Walahi, only criminally inclined women or those with stunted IQ, are attracted to gangbanger couture.

Sometimes its the area you live in. When you live in areas like stone bridge and harlesden which is the epitome of the ghetto its hard to dress in a smart manner.

I'm not a man, but wearing good quality fabrics, and looking gainfully employed works.

Dress these kind of outfits up or down, depending on what you're doing that day.

You can mix and match, so that you don't stick out too much, but also look like an adult. So for example, wear one of those puffer coats, but underneath wear a wool jumper, chinos or normal jeans without 'stylish' rips.

You could make the argument that dressing like a contributing member of society could keep a certain criminal element away :manny:

We don't have control over the circumstances/area you're raised in, but once we're adults, it's on us to better ourselves and trive more like our parents intended. But you have to look the part if you want to sit at the big boys table.

Good quality fabric makes all the difference wallahi. Certain pieces can be a little costly, but they'll last for years. And it's not like they cost more than the gaudy flashy shit people already spend money on anyway.

Appreciate that 🙌🏿. I'll start adding these styles in my wardrobe.

For those of you who like the dark clothing aesthetic, and big puffer coats, you don't even have to compromise your favoured style too much. Just elevate it with some adult pieces.
