The airline company didn't want to stop midway to refuel because it would cost them money to land at an airport. So what did they do? They relied on a 30 more minute extra fuel beyond the destination. Meaning that if something was wrong with the airport then they can land in another airport. They totally disregarded that airplanes never go on a straight path because they almost always have to avoid turbulence and bad weather areas. Most likely this pilot took too many avoidance and practically run out of gas.
