I’ve seen many Somalis express different opinions regarding what somalis believed before embracing Islam, some say we were Christians, some say we followed waaq while others say we followed another animist belief, what do you guys believe our pre-islamic belief was?

Probably Waaq at 1st like other neighbouring Cushites then some converted to Christianity until we were all guided to islam al hamdulilaah

1st: Waaq just like the other cushites specifically the Oromos and Afars.
2nd: Only Jews were Aksumites and Himyars
3rd: Even though we were close to the Xabash they were pagans and were converted to Christianity due to Roman missionaries who went down the Nile.
4th: Islam was introduced and we accepted it.

that might not be true thoo as ancient niggas most likely prayed to a wide range of goods and waaq might just be 1 out of a fuckton of others
It would’ve been harder for us to accept Islam that easily if we weren’t monotheistic :dwill:

not really many people like the romans did convert to monetheistic relgion and they had a fucton of gods practiced in their lands it just took some time plus there quite many people whom studied in the middeleast so that did help spread the faith too

The trinity and Christmas(25th December) are remnants of that. 25th of December used to be a pagan festival

since the area we call home had all sorts of distinct local cultures and variations on the language and so on i would say that every other town or wondering band of nomads had their own unique faiths or through trade brought some from over seas

depending on how far you go back monotheisim wasn't a thing and such people back in those days would attribute god or gods to being representation of the different forces that where surrounding them such water air the sky and so on waaq might just either on of the gods or the king/ruler of the gods

no missionaries from roman egypt not rome itself which is why ethiopians and eritreans follow the egyptian coptic eastern church and not the catholic church in rome

Missionaries are not the only whom are capable of converting people to other faits trade and politicians can do the jobs just as well as. Trough trade people exchange ideas and settle as such bringing their faith with them or simply convert thereby bringing a new faith back home. Politicians can use religion to not only unite but also bring create unity thereby bringing the masses under one banner

Most Somalis nomads were followers of Waaq, like other cushites in the horn.

He was associated with snakes (black mamba), sky and the wagar tree. Waaq was mentioned in the Quran as one of the false gods worshiped in Arabia; Wadd is Waaq, it's just the Arabian version. It was the national god of the Mineans of Yemen, the kings of Main called themselves Waqah, son of Waaq. And the people of Noah used it worship it.
