I knew about this from years ago. This is why I believe the genocide when they send Muslim kids to "re-education" camps, separating them from their parents and environments in Xinjiang, trying to turn them into Han gaal. They want minors away from mosques, yet want them to worship the state. The high Atheist count in China is facetious, in a way, when they commit that hard to the ruling factions. Their idea about religion is viewed as another threat.
It all comes down from that Confucian philosophy of leaders being the natural authority where they know what is correct for their subjects. China's people suffer greatly from the lack of moral meaning, overcompensating by being very self-interested, materialistic, pragmatically disciplined, and only concerned with worldly affairs.
I have no issue with Chinese people, generally. I have for years emphasized a fair judgment on the Chinese ruling body because of the incessant anti-China views spread by the West for mainly competitive reasons. Nonetheless, we have to emphasize how China is doing a lot of harm to Muslims domestically. That country is neither only good nor only negative but it has extreme negatives within it.
