I really wonder why the TDSB and the Toronto Star are always lying about Somalis? There were no specific programs ever implemented for Somali students across the school board to raise our graduation rates and our post-secondary attendance rates. Maybe specific schools, but never across the board. Many "Somali" high schools never had and still don't have any similar programs. There was just a shift in demographics to explain the change, in 2005 your average Somali high school student in grade 12 was born in Somalia, in 2013 they were born in Canada. The kid born here in Canada in the 90's is more likely to succeed than the kid born in the 80's who came here as a refugee. The Task Force started in 2013, so how could they have possibly helped with our rates? Plus, the Task Force also pretty much died out after the TDSB board election last year, so none of their recommendations actually got implemented anyway. There are so many things wrong with this article. The only nice thing about this article is that Somali's are predicted to surpass the TDSB graduation rate within a few years.

The Star has been xaaring on Somalis for a while now lol. But you are right. I saw this and had suspicion but thanks for clearing it up.

First it was the first and only funded ethnic bball organization for Somalis in Ottawa. Then it was education programs geared towards them in Toronto. Ontario Liberals paying Somalis back for 25 years of loyalty. I wonder what else we will get.

I think we are the most important group for them.

:hemad:

From being the lowest graduating group in Toronto to being above the school board and provincial average in 8 years

Somali youth will soon surpass the board-wide graduation rate.

:damedamn:

Keep in mind Johnson, they used my age cohort and compared them to recent graduates (in the 20 teens). Obviously, the high school graduation rate would increase substantially. In addition, they didn't account for individuals that went back to school after dropping out, which appears misleading statistically. Very sneaky. In any case, at least the high school graduation rate will be better than the average (soon). That will be a celebratory moment for Toronto Somalis, which have become the butt of many jokes on low achievement. There has also been an increase in educational programs targeting at-risk youth in recent years i.e. Pathways to Education has made great strides in reaching many priority populations/neighbourhoods in - Lawerence Heights, Regent Park, Rexdale, Scarborough Villages. These areas are ethnic urbanities settled by a large concentration of Somalis.

The topic is not about drug-related violence that occurs between Somalis, which is nominal compared to other countries in the west. It's about high school graduation rates. So, quit derailing the topic.
