In all seriousness I've heard way too many times about Somali kids drowning in rivers.

If you ask your parents, I’d bet they learned. Somalis can swim (culturally), just like most Africans who beaches (coastal countries).

The problem is, a lot of diaspora Somalis when they migrated became part of the poorer classes that didn’t have access to swimming lessons, just like AAs. That’s where the whole “Black people cant swim” stereotype comes from. They weren’t allowed in White-only swimming pools historically, and they also couldn’t afford the lessons. Low SES Somalis are in the same boat. Learning how to swim is a luxury in the West. Only a percentage of us who grew up here can.

2. I was scouted to model in our small town by a struggling photographer in a beat up truck with a missing sideview mirror in my hijab days at an intersection, and I still have a picture of his card in my google drive.

3. I had two near deaths: one in a car accident, and the other a near drowning as a kid, though I ended up competing in swim through school later on.
