Excerpt from Ibrahim Dewla’s speeches and notes.
Every human possesses great abilities, applied towards the right path they become invaluable. But when applied towards the path of desires, caprices and whims his/her abilities are wasted.
Allah has provided man capacity to follow either of two (1) Commandments of Allah or (2) His/her desires. What is the consequence and outcome of ones who pursue desires heedless of Allah’s commandments? Allah will straiten his/her life. The path of desire never leads to peace of mind.
“And whoever turns away from My remembrance – indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., difficult] life” (20:124)
They would be troubled, life becomes restricted. Neither will they possess any good traits nor any compassion. We see in jungle strong attack the weak, in ocean big fish eat the small. They live in world similar to a wild animal who has no concern other than itself.
So the ones who follow their desires would always be anxious. Each desire is an ocean, it has no limits. Indeed! Despite how many means and resources they possess. All paths of unbridled desires lead to frustrations. Regardless how much they receive, they wouldn’t be content. They always feel deprived. Always they want more!
Why is this? Because they subject themselves to desires.
“And who could be more astray than those who follow their desires with no guidance from Allah?” (28:50)
A similitude to desires is fire. Despite how much wood it consumes, its never enough. It will keep demanding more. In spite of devouring a complete building, forest, the fire would want more. Its never satiated.
As fire destroys, so do unbridled desires. Lives, wealth, time are destroyed. What was obtained? Nothing! On death, he/she will realize nothing was obtained. This is why we are called to save ourselves from delusion and follow Allah’s commandments. Allah’s purpose of our creation is to follow his commandments.
