University of Nebraska-Lincoln student Batool Ibrahim, a senior political science and global studies major, is the first Black student regent in the history of the school.

She is also the first Black president of UNL's student association. Ibrahim led a charge against the institution's board of regents to object to a resolution to oppose critical race theory in university curriculum. A number of campus organizations orchestrated rallies outside of the building where the board meeting convened.

In the end, University of Nebraska's Board of Regents voted down the resolution with a 5-to-3 vote, Ibrahim voting in opposition. “The fighting spirit of Ibrahim and the students of UNFL mirror millions of others across the country who continue to push back against those seeking to erase the right to teach and discuss the uncomfortable truths of American history,” Charles Blow said.
