It does not sit right with me that we Somalis use foreign loanwords especially if they’re on important documents such as the Passport which we call Baasaboor.
Instead we should coin new indigenous words instead of crippling our language with unnecessary loanwords.
Hereby I submit this replacement for Baasaboor, correct me or let’s hear other replacements for loanwords that we could easily find Somali equivalent for, or coin Somali words for.
passport = dalmar, dalgal, (from dal meaning country and mar meaning to pass or go to; and gal meaning to enter)
another variation would be
passport = shati kaynaan (from shati meaning permit or authorisation ; and kaynaan which means to travel far away)
passport = shati safar
passport = shati socdaal
Out of these options I’d recommend we use one of these:
The Passport = Shati Socdaalka
The Passport = Dalmarka, Dalgalka
