Western born looking to travel to Africa first time

I have been taken by videos on YouTube of ppl going to Africa, whether it’s Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania et al. I’ve never left my birth country and I’m intrigued and excited to visit East Africa, maybe Kenya or Tanzania. Do you think it’s crazy for us western kids to make the trip? Will we be eaten alive?

Nah, I went EA by myself before. As long as you've planned everything out and listened to advice from family, then everything should be seamless. The last part about advice is extremely important.

When I went EA, my family told me to make sure I did not get pickpocketed, be aware of corrupt police officers, exchange money at reliable vendors, keep your passport on your person always, use Uber over Taxis/Matatu in Kenya and not to trust anyone except for close family.

These rules apply for Kenya, as people in Somalia are generally trustworthy and there is no real petty crime (pickpocketing, theft) to be worried about.

Staying with family saves you money and provides a sense of security but can also hamper any adventurousness. If you want to explore or sightsee, family might make it difficult as they have their plans/work to do and would be unwilling to let you explore by yourself.

These are just my quick tips from someone that has travelled alone to EA.
