What does honour mean to you? How important is it to you? Does our culture value honour? What exemplifies honour in our culture?
Honor to me is having sharaf. Dignity, integrity, dhaqan, deen, kindness, morals, etc.. are all elements that makes up someones honor.

(Good question sister @Idil-Beydaan:nvjpqts: You always bring light to this forum.:it0tdo8:)

Well you made an ironic statement.

Idil

I gave you an opportunity to think deeply and introspectively. And u chicken out. How in the world would u then expect people not to be ironic in a serious topic you dont want to think deeply about yourself? lol

Some parts of our culture I consider to be honorable, and other parts not.

The parts I consider honorable: how we value family, our sense of pride, our love for the culture, our value for knowledge and wisdom, our love for humor, etc...

Parts I don’t consider to be honorable: our level of ignorance, how stubborn we are (especially when it comes to change), how we easily turn to insults when discussing, how blatantly racist we are, how we only use the deen when it benefits us, how we raise our children differently because of their gender, how we run from responsibilities, etc..

What country are you from?
Somewhere in Scandinavia?

Why did u create this thread?
No reason in particular. I just tend to hear the word sharaf a lot. I hear it being misused and used to inflict pain upon others. For that reason I wanted to ask my Somali brethren on what we consider as honour in our culture or the people on sspot's individual view on this concept.

I hope Islam is our honor as Somalis. The English aristocracy used to have the "Gentleman" and "Lady" as honor. English men used to go duel pistol fighting if their honor was insulted. Their honor was like their credit worthy or resume. I believe even in pre Islam arabia, the arabs athough barbarians and camel herders, they had honor which was protected by the tribe they belonged to. So i guess Idil, its natural to yearn for honor/sharaf. Its a human thing. In today modern world, the west, honor is measured by how good a citizen you are. If you have good credit score, no criminal record, etc etc
